What is twill fabric? What are its advantages and disadvantages?

2025-11-29

    Twill is a method of fabric manufacturing, resulting in a fuller surface of the fabric. It is easy to open and set during the printing and dyeing process, which means it does not shrink, as we often say. Twill sets have a higher density than plain weave fabrics, consume more yarn, and have good wear resistance. They are mainly stronger than plain weave fabrics, with better shrinkage control and less shrinkage.

    Twill fabric is divided into single-sided twill and double-sided twill. The number of interlacing of warp and weft is less than that of plain weave, resulting in smaller gaps between warp and weft. The yarns can be closely arranged, leading to a higher fabric density, thicker texture, better luster, Softer hand feel, and better elasticity than plain weave. Under the same conditions of yarn density and thickness, its wear resistance and fastness are inferior to plain weave fabric.

    Advantages:
    1. Good moisture absorption, soft hand feel, hygienic and comfortable to wear;
    2. It is lightweight and warm, and the clothing is comfortable and appropriate;
    3. Soft and snug-fitting, with excellent moisture wicking and breathability.
    Disadvantages:
    1. The appearance is not very crisp and beautiful, and it must be ironed frequently when worn;
    2. It is prone to shrinkage and wrinkling, with relatively poor shrinkage resistance;
    3. Soft and snug-fitting, with excellent moisture wicking and breathability.
